I Want to Be Loved, 2019
Performance on camera, 00:12:00
In this piece, I expose my despair for love and acceptance. In moments when we feel most lonely and abandoned, we strive the hardest to prove that this isn’t the case. I face this shame in this piece by admitting to my desires, yes I am lonely and yes I need love. I carry out a twelve-minute performance on video where I kiss areas of my body as far as I can, imposing the question ‘Is self-love enough?’. The kisses represent the anguish for love as well as the despair for validation that feeds off narcissism. The physicality of the body and the visceral action of kissing oneself demonstrate the empowerment in vulnerability. By exposing oneself one becomes resilient.
